SYNOPSIS
"Ardhanari" traces the life of a transgender named Vinayan (Manoj K. Jayan). The story begins with Vinayan's childhood days. The formative years shows a boy with a girl's sexuality, having the feelings and mannerisms of a girl. There are the inevitable teasing, snide remarks and comments. The confusions and persecutions that follow is heart rending. The lone promise of love from Balu Menon (Jayakrishnan) is a happy event for Vinayan. He is forced to flee home, unable to face the absence of his love and the torture of his elder brother. Sai Kumar plays the role of his father. The film captures the joys and sorrows of Vinayan alias Manjula. Manjula finally reaches a place where the hijda communities live. Vibrant colours, unique customs, a whole new way of life is revealed. This part is a real eye opener for the audience. Others in this place include Jameela (Maniyanpilla Raju) who adopts Manjula, Thilakan as head of the community, etc. There is love and betrayal, and angst and longing. The steady growth of the protagonist as an ardhanari culminates in one of the most poignant scenes in the movie; Vinayan dressed as a woman standing in front of 'her' father, effecting the image of Shiva, the ultimate ardhanari!.The film communicates the plight of this group marginalised by the society and law.
